Osteopathy for Babies

Osteopaths take a detailed history and perform a careful assessment to identify areas of tension or restriction in your baby’s body, including the cranial and facial bones, neck, shoulders and pelvis. Physical forces in utero and during birth, as well as medical interventions such as forceps or caesarean delivery, may contribute to these strains, so we also consider primitive reflexes, neurological findings, orthopaedic and osteopathic examination, and developmental milestones to understand how best to support your baby’s overall wellbeing.

Biodynamic Osteopathy

Biodynamic Osteopathy is a traditional, holistic approach that uses a very gentle touch to engage with the Health - the vitality that supports growth, development and repair throughout life. In treating babies, it supports the body’s innate capacity to return to balance and ease within the whole system. With a perceptive touch, a biodynamic osteopath works with the natural laws present in the tissues, allowing your baby’s system to come to a place of stillness.
Dr. Michelle Sherriff has undertaken additional post‑graduate training in Biodynamic Osteopathy in the Cranial Field, as well as further study in the osteopathic care of children. She works alongside general practitioners, maternal and child health nurses and lactation consultants, arranging referrals when clinically indicated.

Osteopathy and Children

When children complain of musculoskeletal pain it may relate to an unresolved trauma or underlying strain. Osteopaths regularly treat children for the following conditions:

Back pain or postural strain

Scoliosis (S or C shaped spine)

Neck pain or headaches

Shoulder, elbow or wrist pain

Hip, knee or foot pain

Sports injuries

Strains associated with falls

Physical presentation of emotional stress

“Osteopathy is a search for communication and cooperation with the natural laws of healing.”
